Hey y’all! Here’s a yummy recipe that mixes cinnamon rolls and tres leches cake. My husband stumbled upon this Tres Leches Cinnamon Rolls recipe on an IG reel by @recipebyrosie, and it’s now something he has to bake on a consistent basis, haha. We couldn’t track down the original link, but I’ve jotted down the recipe he shared with me here for you to try out.
Ingredients
For the Dough:
- 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F)
- 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 1 egg + 1 egg yolk (room temperature)
- ¼ cup melted butter
- 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp salt
For the Filling:
- ½ cup butter, softened
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
For the Tres Leches Soak:
- ½ cup evaporated milk
- ½ cup sweetened condensed milk
- ½ cup whole milk
For the Cream Cheese Glaze:
- 4 oz cream cheese, softened
- ¼ cup butter, softened
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2-3 tbsp milk (to thin, if needed)
Instructions
Step 1: Make the Dough
- Begin by combining the warm milk and sugar in a large mixing bowl. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes foamy.
- Add the egg, egg yolk, melted butter, and salt to the mixture, and mix until everything is well combined.
- Gradually incorporate the flour, mixing until a sticky dough forms.
- Knead the dough for about 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Cover the bowl and let the dough rise in a warm place for about 1-1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
Step 2: Prepare the Filling
- In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar and cinnamon until well combined.
- Once the dough has risen, roll it out on a lightly floured surface into a 12×18-inch rectangle.
- Spread the softened butter evenly over the dough, then sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture on top.
Step 3: Roll and Slice the Cinnamon Rolls
- Roll the dough tightly from the long edge to form a log.
- Cut the log into 12 equal pieces and place them in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Cover the dish and let the rolls rise again for about 30 minutes, or until they are slightly puffed.
Step 4: Bake
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Bake the cinnamon rolls for 20-25 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top.
Step 5: Prepare the Tres Leches Soak
- In a bowl, whisk together the evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, and whole milk.
- While the rolls are still warm, pour the tres leches mixture evenly over them. Allow the rolls to soak up the milk mixture for at least 15 minutes.
Step 6: Make the Cream Cheese Glaze
- In a medium bowl, beat the cream cheese and butter until smooth.
- Add the powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and milk (as needed) and mix until the glaze is smooth and pourable.
Step 7: Glaze and Serve
- Drizzle the cream cheese glaze over the soaked rolls.
And there you have it—Tres Leches Cinnamon Rolls that are sure to impress your family and friends. Enjoy this delicious fusion of flavors and textures! Happy baking!
